Summer School
The Society holds an annual intensive summer school for students of all levels. There is live music every day and it's a great opportunity to work with senior teachers, world class musicians and meet dancers from around the world.
The Society’s approach draws on the musical and movement languages of Egypt, combining traditional roots with modern expression; and encouraging dancers to understand, feel and express its many layers and nuances. Workshops range from fun introductions to in depth master classes, Sa’aidi stick dance to classical veil. Students experience a wide variety of movement shapes and dynamics to enrich and strengthen their dance and interpretative skills.
Workshops also include elements of bodywork, for example, from Pilates and Alexander Technique, which help to develop strength and mobility. They also enable students to develop internal body awareness and engage specific muscles essential to achieving the presentation and style of the different forms of Raqs Sharqi.
The Summer intensive also features:
- Music and DVD, and costume bazaars
- A party with live music and opportunities to perform
- An evening of dance videos
- Tabla and percussion classes - a popular course of workshops covering the main rhythms which underpin the dance.
Students are normally divided into two levels
Group A for Beginners II/Intermediate students: receive a thorough grounding in technique, improving transitions and understanding music.
Group B for Intermediate/Advanced (for those with at least 4 years experience of Raqs Sharqi who are fluent in the movement language and confident with the conventions of the different forms): gain a deeper understanding of the subtleties of improvisation and choreography, and performance skills.
In 2008 our summer school has been delayed and will take place as an Autumn weekend intensive in London.
