Teacher Training

Plans for the next teacher training course are in their initial stages and we regret that we don't know when the start date will be. Application to the course will be by CV and covering statement, and submission of a video demonstrating technical and choreographic abilities in the different Raqs Sharqi forms and current teaching practice (if applicable).

The course is likely to consist of 8 to 10 weekend modules over a period of approximately two years, with considerable ongoing personal work inbetween. We expect that modules will be held in different locations throughout the country which are easily accessible by by both UK and international travellers. Course content will include:

  • dancer's own technique and expression
  • anatomically safe and effective use of body throughout
  • history of music and dance
  • choreographic and interpretational skills, in theory and practice
  • specific teaching skills for Egyptian dance
  • strong individual support

It is now a requirement that anyone in the UK employed to teach in adult education by their local authority has a formal teaching qualification (e.g. Cert.Ed/PGCE/PCE or City & Guilds teaching qualifications). This revised course will therefore reflect that most students will be acquiring skills and knowledge in general teaching practice from other routes.

As soon as details of the course are available they will be announced on this website and through our newsletter, subscribers to our e-list will automatically be notified. In the meantime you are welcome to express your interest and leave your details with our administrator on dance@raqssharqisociety.org
