Raqs Sharqi Society Open Day

Our Open Day took place at Siobhan Davies Dance Studios on Sunday 9th March 2008 and introduced people to the many styles of Raqs Sharqi. Workshops on offer were Baladi with live music, dance to a drum solo, classical and folk styles, stick dance, percussion, playfulness in Raqs Sharqi, as well as an introductory workshop for beginners. Performances at community and professional level took place throughout the day, and rounded off the event with a finale to live music.

'The day was great fun! Seeing the different forms of the dance alongside each other helped me to understand the differences between them as well as recognise the movements they share.'  Aimee P., Oxford.

'The day was fun - relaxed and informative with something for everyone' Layla D., London

'I thoroughly enjoyed the Open Day, which I found well-organised and welcoming. It was great to experience different teaching styles. . . The different styles of dance performances with the musicians brought an exhilarating end to the day, which had also included video showings and an opportunity to taste the food that accompanies the culture.  It was rather crowded but the venue held up and had a good ambience.  I also much appreciated the price, which made the event seem very inclusive' Lesley F., London

The event was a sell out with nearly 160 people attending, 60% of which were new to the Raqs Sharqi Society, so a big thank you to everyone who took part, brought along friends and helped to spread the word. A thank you too, to Awards for All who provided funding to support the event.
